2026-27 Topps Flagship Basketball box

2026-27 Topps Flagship Basketball: A Lot of Paper, and Somewhere in It a Pearl

First look, written October 7, 2026, two weeks before street date. Topps has published the checklist and box configurations, the odds sheet is not out yet. Everything below comes from the official checklist and Topps product pages, nothing is estimated.

TL;DR
Flagship is a lot of paper with the occasional real pearl hiding in it. 300 base cards, a 300-card Blackout run, two Flagship Collection sets of 90, two 1981-82 sets of 100, golden mirrors, team borders, player numbers. One auto or relic per Hobby box. You buy it because it is the first pack of the new NBA season with the 2026 rookies in it, not because the box math works. Rip for fun, buy the rookie singles you want.

Before We Get Into It

Flagship basketball opens the season. It is the first product with the 2026 rookie class on an NBA card: AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson, Keaton Wagler, Mikel Brown Jr. and a long list behind them. That is the entire reason this release matters, and it is a good reason. Every year the first rookie card of a new class has a pull of its own, simply because nothing else exists yet.

The honest flip side: Flagship is paper. Lots of it. The checklist runs to 3,257 entries across 67 subsets, and the vast majority of what comes out of a Hobby box is base, Blackout, Flagship Collection and inserts in the 1-in-a-few-packs range. Somewhere in there sits the card that makes the box, a Clear Variation numbered to 10, a Gold 1/1 All Kings, a Rookie Photo Shoot auto of the right guy. Most boxes will not have it. Go in knowing that.

Read the Hobby line twice: auto or relic. One hit, and it can be a relic. Jumbo is the only format that guarantees both. Topps sold out Hobby and Jumbo in preorder on its own site, and the Hobby price is not listed there anymore. Checklist Insider reports $169.99 for Hobby presale against $109.99 for last year's 2025-26 Hobby box. If that number holds, Flagship basketball is no longer the entry-level product its name suggests, and the single-hit Hobby box gets hard to justify.

What Is Actually in the Base Set

Topps splits the 300 base cards into 200 veterans, 40 rookies, 30 team cards and 30 retired players. The published checklist flags 45 base cards as rookies, so a few names beyond the core 40 carry the RC tag. Every base card also has a Blackout version, another 300 cards.

Topps also pushes the first Giannis Antetokounmpo Heat card. That one is real, base #17 in Miami colors.

The LeBron Problem

On July 24, 2026, Topps posted a LeBron James Sixers card on Instagram, roughly a minute before ESPN's Shams Charania reported the signing. A trading card company broke the biggest free agency story of the summer. That only works because Fanatics owns Topps and holds an exclusive card deal with LeBron. The NBA reportedly felt blindsided by the rollout, and the 1/1 autograph shown in the post had not even been signed yet, the signature was added digitally.

The card itself was Topps Now OS03, an open edition at $11.99 a card. It passed 100,000 copies within hours. Everyone who bought one was chasing a single 1/1 autograph redemption, odds of roughly one in 100,000 per card, and worse with every additional order.

Now Flagship. Topps sells this release with the first LeBron James Sixers cards. Two problems. First, the first LeBron Sixers card already exists, it is that Topps Now card from July. Second, the Flagship checklist Topps published lists every LeBron card as a Laker: base #57 and #239, the Clear and Golden Mirror variations, All Kings, Quest for the Crown, Bounce, Certified Cold, both 1981-82 autographs, the Real One relic, Own the Game and Impact Relics. 29 entries, zero Sixers.

Either the Sixers versions are unlisted cards that show up at release, or the checklist was locked before the move and the cards show him in Lakers colors. We don't know yet, and neither does anyone selling you a LeBron Sixers Flagship spot today. Wait for the first verified pull before you pay for one.

The bigger point: a card company announcing a player move and then selling product around it, under the same owner that holds the player's exclusive deal, turns the hobby into a marketing channel. Good for Fanatics, not automatically good for you. Buy LeBron if you collect LeBron, not because a press release calls a moment historic.

SSPs and the Pearls

This is where the box gets made or not. Without odds this is a provisional call. All Kings, Bounce and Quest for the Crown are named Super Short Prints by Topps, the Clear Variations are numbered, the rest is filed as SSP based on how these sets fall in Flagship. We correct it once the odds sheet is out.

Card Size Why it matters Formats
Base Clear Variation 100 cards New this year, acetate, numbered to 10. 30 of the 100 are rookies All, Topps also lists Clear in Fat Packs
All Kings 24 cards Topps calls it a Super Short Print. First Gold 1/1 All Kings in Topps basketball. 14 stars and legends, 10 rookies All
Bounce 25 cards Super Short Print, textured like a real basketball. 15 vets and legends, 10 rookies All
Quest for the Crown 10 cards Super Short Print, ten title contenders, no rookies Hobby and Jumbo only
Base Player Number Variation 100 cards Short print variation Hobby exclusive
Base Golden Mirror Image I, II, III 100 cards each Short print variations, III is where the 45 rookies sit All
Base Team Color Border Variation 100 cards Short print variation All
Certified Cold 10 cards Wembanyama, SGA, LeBron, Dončić, Curry and the top five rookies. A retail SSP, a reason to open Megas Retail only
Dylan Wang base and From the Stands 1 card each Chinese actor and singer, filed with the Lakers, plus a Real One autograph. A crossover card with a fan base outside the hobby All

Our honest read: the Clear Variation is the real pearl of this product. A /10 acetate rookie card of Dybantsa or Peterson from the first product of the season is the kind of card that still means something in five years. The Gold 1/1 All Kings is the headline, but a 1/1 is a lottery ticket, not a plan.

Inserts: Hobby Gets the Good Stuff

Hobby and Jumbo exclusives: Quest for the Crown, Comic Court, From the Vault, New School, The Daily Dribble and Levitation, plus Victory parallels and Player Number Variations in Hobby. Retail gets Soundcheck, Certified Cold and Holo Foil parallels instead. New this year are Poster Factory (dunkers) and Drivers (slashers).

Same lesson as every Flagship: no single format gets you the whole rainbow. If you chase a full player run, you are buying across formats or buying singles. Singles is cheaper.

2026-27 Topps Flagship Basketball Own the Game relic Luka Doncic

Own the Game relic, Dončić

Three things the marketing does not tell you. First, Luka Dončić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have no autograph anywhere on the checklist, only relics and inserts. Second, LeBron signs only in the two 1981-82 sets. Third, the top seven rookies (Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer, Wilson, Wagler, Brown Jr., Flemings) each sit in 8 autograph sets and 4 relic sets, so the rookie ink is spread wide, not scarce. Darius Acuff Jr. is in the base set and the SSP inserts but has no auto or relic at all. Topps has not said which autographs are on-card and which are stickers, we will update that once boxes are open.

For a single-hit Hobby box the relic risk is real: a meaningful share of the guaranteed hits are veteran relics, and a modern relic of a non-star is rarely worth much.

Hits by Team

Every autograph appearance on the checklist counted by team, parallels excluded. This is what matters when you price break spots.

Dallas Mavericks

41
Atlanta Hawks

33
Oklahoma City Thunder

32
New York Knicks

27
Charlotte Hornets

26
Boston Celtics

25
San Antonio Spurs

24
Los Angeles Lakers

22

Bottom of the table: New Orleans (3), Portland (4) and Cleveland (5). Philadelphia has only 11, and that is with no LeBron Sixers auto on the checklist.

The volume spot
Dallas Mavericks
41 auto slots, 23 of them rookies. Morez Johnson Jr. and Sergio De Larrea in 8 sets each, Tobi Lawal in 7, plus Cooper Flagg and Dirk on top.
The rookie headline
Washington Wizards
19 autos, but AJ Dybantsa is the name of this class and he sits in 8 auto sets and 4 relic sets. Pay for the name, not the volume.
Depth with stars
Oklahoma City Thunder
32 autos and the most relics (20). Aday Mara and Bennett Stirtz in 8 auto sets each, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams on Real One. No SGA auto.
Rookie plus vet
Atlanta Hawks
33 autos, Kingston Flemings in 8 sets, Zuby Ejiofor and Henri Veesaar in 7, Jalen Johnson and Risacher on the veteran side.

Our Grades

Category Grade One line
Rookie class A First cards of a deep class, this is why the product exists
Base set B 300 cards plus Blackout, good for set builders, a lot of paper for everyone else
SSPs B+ Clear /10 and Gold 1/1 All Kings are real chase, Bounce is a fun idea
Hits per box D One auto or relic per Hobby box, and it can be a veteran relic
Value for money C Retail is fair, Hobby depends on the final price and that price went up

Who Should Buy What

Set builder
Hobby or Jumbo
You want the base set, Blackout and the Hobby-only inserts. Jumbo gives you the most cards and both hits.
Fun rip
Mega or Value
$29.99 and $59.99 are honest prices for a pack-opening evening with the new rookies. Mega adds four 1981-82 inserts.
Rookie collector
Singles
Wait two to three weeks after release and buy the Dybantsa or Boozer card you actually want. Base rookies will be everywhere.
Team collector
Break spot
Check the hits-by-team chart and the checklist before you pay for a spot. Some teams are thin.

The European View

Topps sold out Hobby and Jumbo in its own preorder, so for European buyers this comes down to EU distributors and import. Import from the US adds shipping, 19 percent German import VAT and carrier handling fees on top of the dollar price, which turns a single-hit box into an expensive single hit. Mega and Value boxes are the formats that make sense to buy sealed here. For the chase cards, singles are the cleaner route, they cross borders without the box markup.

Buy the card because you want it, not because everyone else does.
