The box is not the problem. The rookie class is the problem. The Pitch Black Pairings are the reason.
Before We Get Into It
The internet is calling this one of the strongest rookie classes in recent NFL draft history. Let's be honest about that claim. The 2024 class - Caleb Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., Rome Odunze, Brock Bowers, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, Michael Penix, Drake Maye - was deeper across the board. The 2025 class has Ward, Dart, Jeanty and a group of players who are still at the start of their careers. That does not make it a bad class.
And to be fair - Ward went 17 games, 59.8% completion, 3,169 yards, 15 TDs, 7 INTs, passer rating 80.2, QBR 33.2. Dart went 14 games, 63.7% completion, 2,272 yards, 15 TDs, 5 INTs, passer rating 91.7, QBR 57.5. Neither stat line is a disaster. Neither is a statement. Both played behind bad offensive lines with minimal help and both managed to not completely fall apart - which in their respective situations counts for something. Dart writes funny inscriptions at signings. Ward has a good arm. The hype is built on potential, not production. They need to prove it on the field before the cards justify the prices they carry across five premium products.
The broader issue is that Topps acquired the NFL license in April and has since released Signature Class, Finest, Chrome, Cosmic Chrome, and now Chrome Black - five premium products, same rookie class, roughly four months. The rookie card market is waking up again as the NFL season approaches but we are still chasing last season's names at prices set during peak off-season hype. Every new release dilutes every previous one. The Ward and Dart autos in Chrome Black are the same players as in Signature Class, just in a different dark-aesthetic wrapper. The hobby has always worked this way. That does not make it wrong - it just means you need to know what you are paying for.
335 EUR, 13 cards, one guaranteed on-card auto encased in a magnetic holder. The format is clean and the price is defensible for what it is. The Pitch Black Pairings give this product something none of the previous four releases had. That is the argument.

14 parallel tiers. The Wave variants are the interesting addition - Blue Wave /150 and Green Wave /99 exist alongside their solid-color counterparts at the same print run, giving rainbow chasers two distinct cards at the same numbered tier. Purple /75 is the first parallel that genuinely pops against the dark Chrome Black base - the color contrast works harder here than it would on a standard Chrome product. Rose Gold /15 is an unusual choice that works well aesthetically.

Not because of the volume - 17 cards is small - but because of how well the pairings were constructed. Whoever built this list was actually thinking about legacy, team history, and storytelling rather than just grabbing two big names.
The remaining seven: Caleb Williams/Luther Burden III (Bears teammates), CJ Stroud/Nico Collins (Texans), Malaki Starks/Ray Lewis (Ravens generational), Omarion Hampton/Tre Harris III (Chargers rookies), Quinshon Judkins/TreVeyon Henderson (cross-team), Tua/Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins), Kaleb Johnson/Will Howard (Steelers rookies). The top ten are the chase list. The bottom seven are filler.

The Shedeur Sanders situation is the biggest checklist story nobody is talking about. Two appearances total - Rookie Auto and Rookie Design Variation. He is the most hyped quarterback name of the 2025 class by media standards and Topps gave him the thinnest treatment of any major rookie in the product. No Ivory Auto. No Super Futures. No Black Lightning. No Nocturnal. This suggests either the checklist was locked before the Cleveland draft situation resolved or Topps made a deliberate call. Either way the checklist weight does not match the market hype around his name.
Tyler Shough at three appearances is the most interesting value play. If Shough earns the Saints starting role and delivers on the field, two of those three appearances are auto sets - and the checklist will look very thin relative to the player's value. That is an upside scenario, not a guarantee.

Ivory Autographs
The best-designed auto set in the product and the best reason to want a case. The ivory card stock against the dark Chrome Black aesthetic creates genuine visual contrast. Brady, Rice, Staubach, Moss, Elway, Brees, Peyton Manning alongside current stars and key rookies. The design treatment feels earned rather than generic. If you pull an Ivory Auto of a top-tier legend you have pulled one of the best cards Topps has made in football this year.
Pitch Black Pairings
Already covered in detail above. The concept is the best in the product. Numbered /30 or less, all on-card, all genuinely constructed around meaningful pairings rather than random teammate adjacency. The design gives both players equal visual weight which is harder to execute than it sounds on a dual auto card. Maye/Brady is a top-five football card of 2026.
Base Card Dark Chromium Design
The Chrome Black base treatment - dark background, high contrast player image, shadow-driven visual language - is genuinely distinctive from anything else Topps has made in football. The purple and rose gold parallels in particular benefit from the dark base more than they would on a standard Chrome product. The aesthetic is the product's identity and it commits to it fully.
Nocturnal
Moon, mountains, evergreens, body of water in dark chromium. Atmospheric and well-executed visually. The problem is it does not feel native to Chrome Black's urban drama aesthetic - it belongs in a different product called Midnight or something similar. The card looks good. It just looks like it arrived from the wrong address. Checklist: Williams, Burrow, Nix, Manning, McCarthy, Penix, Robinson, Prescott, Herbert, Jefferson, Nabers, Hurts, McCaffrey, Odunze, Dart, Jeanty, Carter, Judkins, McMillan, Henderson.
Black Lightning
Reversed color lightning bolts on a dark sky. The concept is recognizable and the Topps design team clearly wants this to become a cornerstone chase insert across future Chrome Black years. The execution reads as a black-and-white colorblast effect with lightning overlay - visually interesting but not as distinctive as it needs to be at case-hit rarity to justify the price. The checklist saves it: Jackson, Allen, Daniels, Mahomes, Brady, Williams, Burrow, Chase, Garrett, Herbert, Stroud, Lamb, Nabers, Barkley, Hurts, Thomas, Love, Jefferson, Harrison, Ward, Hunter, Jeanty, McMillan, Henderson, Dart.
Depths of Darkness
The shadowbox concept is good and the geometric border design is native to Chrome Black's identity. The player selection logic is harder to follow. Why is Kyler Murray in a set called Depths of Darkness? Why Jalen Milroe? Why Omarion Hampton? There is no obvious editorial principle. It is 20 cards that include genuine depth names like Jackson, Allen, Daniels, Mahomes, Brady, Kelce, Garrett, Myles Garrett alongside players who feel arbitrarily selected. The design is better than the editorial logic behind the checklist.
Hit the Lights
Stadium lights and unique colorization. Looks like a Finest insert that got on the wrong bus. Not bad but not Chrome Black. The checklist is broader and less selective than Black Lightning - Bo Jackson as card HL-17 is a genuinely interesting inclusion, Peyton Manning in a Broncos context works. The design does not commit fully to the Chrome Black identity the way Nocturnal and Depths of Darkness do.
Rookie Design Variations
Alternate-design versions of rookie base cards. 30 cards, case-hit rarity. The concept makes sense in Signature Class where rookie design variations are the entire editorial point. In a 335 EUR dark-aesthetic premium Chrome product they feel imported from a different release. The design is under-average for this price point and the cards would fit better in a mid-tier product where alternate rookie designs are the main event.
The Rookie Checklist - What Chrome Black Does and Does Not Give You
Rookie Auto Rose Gold Wave /15 - Tyler Shough.
Every auto in this product is on-card. That alone is a meaningful upgrade over most of what Topps released this year. Ward, Dart, Jeanty, Egbuka, McMillan all have solid multi-set coverage. Ward and Dart get the Pitch Black Pairings which no other 2025 product has given them - and that pairing context adds something a straight Rookie Auto never can.
Where Chrome Black is slightly thinner than Signature Class or Cosmic Chrome on specific names: Sanders at two appearances only, Skattebo limited to Rookie Auto and Super Futures with no Ivory or insert presence, Tyler Warren and Shough with minimal coverage. These are names that matter to team collectors and break buyers. The checklist does not ignore them but it does not fully commit to them either.
The upside play hiding in the thin coverage: Sanders at two appearances means almost no Chrome Black supply if he earns the Cleveland starting role and delivers. Shough is the same logic - Saints starter, three appearances, real upside if the football follows. These are speculative, not safe. But supply and demand works both ways.
The distribution table above tells the story clearly. Top three names get deep coverage, everyone else is lighter. That is a deliberate product choice for a premium chase set - and compared to the other four 2025 products it is not dramatically worse. It is just more selective.

The case for Chrome Black is simple: Pitch Black Pairings and Ivory Autos are the best card concepts in any Topps football product this year. Maye/Brady is the best legacy card Topps has made in football in 2026. Montana/Purdy is the 49ers pairing collectors actually want. These cards hold value independent of what Ward or Dart do in year two - because the legacy half of the pairing does not have a good or bad season anymore. That already happened.
The honest caveat: this is the fifth product with the same rookie class in one off-season and the secondary market reflects that. Buy the concept. Buy the pairings. Be thoughtful about buying straight rookie autos purely for resale when the supply has been building since spring.
We will break it. We will pull something. The dark aesthetic is genuinely different from anything else on the market this year and the Ivory Autos and Pitch Black Pairings are worth chasing. That is the honest summary.
